Egypt - Country of contrasts

Located in the northeast of Africa, Egypt is home to 76 million habitants with an area almost three times as huge as Germany. Bordered by Sudan, Libya, the Gaza strip and Israel, it is a country of contrasts: On one hand, there is the Nile River as Egypt’s lifeline. Above 90 percent of the population live close to the fertile area of the Nile and its Delta that marks only four percent of the entire country’s territory. All the important cities like Cairo, the capital, or Alexandria are located at the river’s shores. Almost the whole rest of Egypt, officially known as the Arab Republic of Egypt, consists of deserts, except the Mediterranean coast and some oases.
